In our contemporary world of information technologies and communication, English has inevitably become the universal language used in international communication without which it is almost impossible to survive in the modern World. English Language Preparatory Schools play an essential role in this respect by providing the students with the requisite language skills required to function at the appropriate level of proficiency in their specialism.

In accordance with the needs of the globalizing world, at Rauf Denktaş University English Preparatory School our students get the opportunity to enhance their intercultural skills by studying English in the same classes with students from other countries and cultures. The primary objective of our English Preparatory School is to equip our students with the necessary English language and skills required for higher education at international standards, so as to prepare them for their studies in their departments, as well as their future careers.

Aims

The FLEPS aims to provide Rauf Denktaş University students with the opportunity to learn English Language, which is used in the international arena. Our language programs offer courses to help students to meet the language requirements necessary for their academic and social lives by using student-centered methods and techniques.

In addition to English courses, Basic Mathematics, Computer and Turkish language courses are offered to students who continue their preparatory education so that they can further improve their academic knowledge and skills.

General Info

The medium of instruction at Rauf Denktaş University (RDU) is English and Foreign Language and English Preparatory School (FLEPS) which is a unit within its academic structure was founded along with the establishment of the Rauf Denktaş University in September 2018.The Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School at Rauf Denktaş University plays an important role in providing a range of English courses to students who have been admitted to English-medium degree programs.
At the beginning of each academic year, all students are required to take the proficiency/level examination. As per the examination results, students who demonstrate an inadequate level of English proficiency to carry out their studies in their departments are required to improve their level of English by attending the English Preparatory Program prior to the first term in the respective faculty.
Students have access to all educational opportunities for success. They may receive one-on-one study with teachers outside the classroom as part of Remedial Teaching schedule, borrow books from the library to improve reading. In addition to these they can use digital platforms and other utilities in the laboratories.

Program Structure

Rauf Denktaş University is a private institution which was founded in February 2015 and the first students were accepted in September 2018. English Preparatory School was established on the same date along with Rauf Denktaş University. The student intake has increased each year since 2018.

Rauf Denktaş University is an English Medium higher institution and English Preparatory School (EPS) is a unit within the academic structure of the RDU. The main aim of the Foreign Languages and Preparatory School (FLEPS) is to provide General English Language (ENGL 001 and ENGL 002) and English for Academic Purposes (ENGL 101 and ENGL 102) courses to newly admitted students who are not at the required English language proficiency levels to start their programs. In addition to these language courses, students are offered ITEC, Turkish and Mathematics courses at FLEPS in order to be ready to their departmental studies.

English Placement Exam

Students, who register to Rauf Denktaş University (RDU) programs and are unable to confirm their English Language Proficiency levels with a valid document (see the Exemption Criteria), are required to take the English Proficiency and Placement Exam at the beginning of the academic semester before they start their studies. Students who attain the required level can enroll in courses offered in their registered programs. Students who are under the required level for their program are placed into English Preparatory School for one or two semesters according to their levels as determined by the exam results.

English Placement Examination aims to assess students’ English proficiency in grammar, listening, reading and writing. The test consists of 80 multiple choice questions and an essay writing task. A sample test is available on RDU’s website.

The students, who achieve a score above %50 from English Placement Exam, are eligible to start their studies in their departments.

Program Structure

Curriculum Documents

The intensive English language course at the Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School (FLEPS) is designed to help undergraduate students to achieve a CEFR B1 level of proficiency in English language respectively. The learning program in English  Preparatory School is a two-semester (4 levels) program that includes A1, A2, B1 and B1+ levels correlated with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). In addition to the English Language courses, students are offered Turkish, Math and ITEC courses in FLEPS programme.

The courses in our FLEPS programme are as follows;

ENGL 001 (Basic User of English Language)

This course aims to make students reach CEFR Level A1 and A2. The students will acquire language proficiency Level A1 and A2 which allows them to cope with every day recurring communication situations requiring direct and easy information exchange on familiar routine topics and able to communicate in everyday situations with commonly-used expressions and elementary vocabulary. Students who reach CEFR Level A2 can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters and describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas in areas of immediate need.

ENGL 002 (Independent User of English Language)

The aim of this course is to support students to acquire English language proficiency level B1 and B1+ which corresponds to independent users of the English language i.e. those who can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc., can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken, can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest, can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

ENGL 101 (Academic English I)

This course aims to enhance academic skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking of the students who have mastered level B2. It aims to provide students with the necessary skills to express themselves verbally and in writing in the academic language.

ENGL 102 (Academic English II)

This course is designed to help students improve the level of their English to B2+ level, as specified in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The course connects critical thinking with language skills and incorporates learning technologies. The purpose of the course is to consolidate students’ knowledge and awareness of academic discourse, language structures, and lexis. The main focus will be on the development of productive (writing and speaking) and receptive (reading) skills in academic settings.

TURK 101

This course provides an orientation to modern Turkish language for foreign students who wish to communicate in this language for their needs.

MATH 100

This course introduces mathematics and especially show how mathematics is applied to solve fundamental engineering problems.

ITEC 100

This course introduces the concepts of information, networking technologies and operation and helps students to improve their skills on Microsoft.

Exemption Criteria

Students, who are enrolled in English-medium programs at Rauf Denktaş University (RDU) but do not have a valid English proficiency certificate, are required to take the English Proficiency Exam at English Preparatory School (EPS) and meet the requirements of their departments.

The exemption criteria and the equivalent English Preparatory School success requirements stipulated by Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School (FLEPS) for students who have any valid language (English) proficiency certificate are as follows:

assessed and determined by the School of Foreign Languages.

Why should students attend FLEPS in RDU?

Attending the English Preparatory Program offered in RDU will undeniably have many benefits for the students. These benefits can be summarized as follows:

  • Students who attend and successfully complete the English Preparatory Program will be in great demand in their sectors when they combine the English they have learned with their academic and vocational studies and training,
  • Students who would like to participate in study abroad programs will be one step closer to passing the English Proficiency Exam, as well as being one step ahead of others in their academic and social life when using their foreign language skills, in the countries they are visiting,
  • When these students apply to companies for internship, they will have an advantage over others because they know English, and are bound to be preferred,
  • In addition to English, students are offered Turkish, Math and ITEC courses in preparatory school and they have a chance to improve their skills on the mentioned areas they will strengthen qualifications necessary for their department.
  • Turkish course is especially designed for our foreign students who will be in need of communication in a Turkish speaking country.

Students may receive one-on-one study with teachers outside the classroom as part of Remedial Teaching schedule, borrow books from the English Preparatory School library to improve reading skills as well as utilize the digital platforms and other utilities in the laboratories to the fullest extent .
